Crashing

Crashing is a part of mountain biking but if you practise the techniques we are showing you will spend less time on the ground. Practise letting the bike float underneath you and be prepared to either jump or suck up the bumps. In confined areas you need to maintain good clearances for your bar-handles to avoid brutally sudden crashes.Crashing is often caused by pointless use of brakes or using them in a wrong situation. Go back to the braking drills and practise proper modulation and body positions. Remember at times the safest thing to do is to release the brakes to regain control. This means you need to control your speed well in advance.

55:02
Keep the tires rolling for maneuverability; control and stopping power. Get off the brakes to traverse a rock; turn or cross other obstacles. Get on them hardly and then get off them.Cleats enable you to use more muscle for climbing power and descending control. A lot of people fall when they are trying to get their feet out especially going up hill, when you have a lot of pressure on the pedals. The solution is easy, develop the ability to quickly take either foot off the pedal, use tracks end drill to practise take foot out quickly.

55:36
A lot of people only think about the motion when they get out of the cleats, the easiest motion, the one with the least amount of friction, is where you foot comes out of the cleat, parallel to the pedal. Practise balancing long enough to take either foot out at any position of the paddle stroke. Anticipate which side will be better for putting your foot down. Trying on the top of the stroke is the hardest area. If you are new to using cleats, practise lots of releases before tackling technical trails, adjust or change the cleats. Or pedals if having continue problems. Another way to avoid crashes is by staying aware of your pedal clearance in turns and around rocks. Sometimes you will wretch it or sturdy pedal to avoid contact. Timing your pedal is easier, when you in a harder gear, because your pedals won’t be coming around as often.

56:37
Here is a classic example of when you need to time you paddle stroke, you got a rock here with a bunch of marks on it, you can se that people didn’t quite get the timing right, which is critical about this spot is when you come upon this rock. You will hit your right pedal stroke, it throws you away to the left, and there is nothing to put your left foot on, so you will go down towards these rocks.

56:52
When I come upon this rock, I try to time it so that my right pedal is at the bottom of the stroke, down here where there is plenty of clearance. And then as I come up over this point of the rock my pedal doesn’t have anything to hit.

57:22
When you do crash, and you will, it can be serious; a proper reaction can minimize the pain. When you fall at slow speeds, you might want to hang on to the handlebars, when you crash, because by sticking out a stiff arm, shock will be send-up right to your collarbone. If you find yourself going over the bars you might be able to stand on your feet and run it out to safety. If you have to bail at higher speeds, the best plan might be to hit the ground hands first and tuck your shoulders and roll. In any case being relaxed helps prevent injury.
